The shift towards a greener economy is a defining challenge for the European Union, with job quality at the heart of the discussion. As part of the project, a dedicated Lab session will delve into the pressing question: Are green jobs quality jobs?
With the appointment of the new Executive Vice-President for Social Rights, Quality Jobs and Preparedness, the EU is prioritising the creation of high-standard employment opportunities. This focus is particularly crucial in the context of the green transition, which must ensure that workers transitioning from carbon-intensive industries can secure jobs with fair wages, adequate conditions, and opportunities for skills development.
TransEuroWorkS will be present at the IdeasLab25 (3-4 March 2025) with a session exploring the relationship between the labour market and the green transition, examining the impact of climate change and sustainability measures on job quality. Key questions will be addressed, including how to improve the quality of green jobs and what policies can support workers through this transition.
The panel will feature experts from leading institutions, including:
- Achim Schmillen, Lead Economist and Program Leader for Human Development for the EU Member States, The World Bank
- Barbara Gerstenberger, Head of Working Life Unit, Eurofound
- Francesco Corti, Member of Cabinet of EVP Roxana Mînzatu, European Commission
- Alexandre Ounnas, Research Fellow, CEPS (Moderator)
This timely discussion will provide valuable insights into ensuring a just and equitable green transition, highlighting strategies to foster quality employment in an evolving economic landscape.
